lulu - The "white stuff" just needs cleaned off weekly. On the day that you remove water just wipe the glass down. I use the magnet glass cleaners like the one you can see at the link below, and they work really well.

Or you can use a algae mit or scraper of your choice.
Snail eggs are usually pretty easy to spot on glass. They are usually laid in masses that look like a cluster of eggs rather than a white film.
Axolotl eggs are pretty big, you will know them when you see them.
