Here is my solution to the problem. This allows ventilation, while it also keeps the fruit flies inside and the fungus gnats outside. If you wanted more ventilation, the whole top of the tub could be cut out. I live in a very dry climate, so I prefer to have just the small air holes to reduce evaporation.
