Hello Everyone.
I was at the petshop with my mum today and saw the cutest little newt and gave my mum that *plz can i have it look* Upon letting me buy it along with a tank, fluval 1 and gravel and all that stuff i realised i know nout about these really.

So i came home and whinged till i got on the pc and did my research :p
My questions

What temperature is best for my little fella?
How Do i know is he is a Boy or a girl?
What Species does he belong to (hes a otter-head newt)

Now my tank contains the gravel at the bottom and has a large stone that goes from the gravel to about the level of water.. - can he float or climb or swim there? Bcos i got told to have the stone so he cud get air and sit but am curious as to how he gets up there!

I was also wondering is a undergravel filter neccessary if i have my Fluval 1 Filter?

Right well ill leave it at that for now and i will hopefully post sum piccies of my new critter shortly.

Much Love Laura xxxx

OH and also is a light neccessary or are they just for exposure

otter head newt ?
what colour ,size ,shape , planet.
its a new one on me.

Hmmmm i shall take a piccie but what but the rest of my questions? any help with them :p

Well males have more swollen cloacas than females and they have a longer slit in the cloaca too.

To identify the species I need a pic of the newt.

Temperature varys upon the species sometimes but the temp should always be cool. A good temp to keep the tank at would be 65 degrees F.

Try to add a picture of the exhibit too.

In regards to your land portion, its always best to ensure that your "Otter-Head" will have an easy go of it to get on the land. If you think that there will be some difficulty for your newt, chances are that he/she will agree with you. a gradual slope up to land or some form of ramp created by vegetation is always a good idea. I used my substrate as a giant ramp. this has the downside as it consumes a lot of volume.

mmm...to me otter head suggests Pachytriton Labiatus....but that's just my guess.
Never heard that common name before though, but don't you guys think paddletails heads are kinda otter like?

Definately a Paddletail newt. And a good looking one too. Good find!

Lol he cost like 5.50 so i was like why not - then totalled up the equipment - a whole other story :p lol came to more than 5:50 i tell you..

Soooo worth it he is cute ^__^

I have a paddle tailed. Very neat little guy. You picked out one with very nice colouration. Good luck with him.

I have never heard of anything being called "otter head newt"/ I'd like stores using Latin names, but that is just me...

Laura, I sent you an e-mail (though your profile on this site) regarding your photo. If you didn't get my mail, please contact me: jpmacke "at" caudata.org

Regarding some of your previous questions... you surely do not need an undergravel filter. In fact, gravel is dangerous (swallowing hazard) if it is a size that can be ingested. And a paddletail does not need much (if any) place to get out of the water, they are strictly aquatic. If you have any questions not covered in enough detail on the website, feel free to ask.
