Moving newts

this weekend, i'll be moving back to my into dorm, 2 hours from home. i was wondering what the best way to "pack" my two eastern newts would be?obviously, i'm planning on separating them for the ride, as well as seatbelting them in if theres room in the car. if not, they'll be wedged between boxes so they dont move around too much. when i got them from the pet store, they were on damp paper towels in a plastic bag, but this seems like a kind of harsh environment for a long drive (plus the time it takes me to set up their tank, probably another hour). is there a reccommended way to transport them?

Can you get ahold of a small cricket/critter keeper...They sell them at most pet stores and at walmart...Its a way of easy transportation
just put a damp paper towel or real towel in the bottom of the keeper...

Damp towels, like hayden says, is the way to go. They can be shipped for several days like that, no problem. You might want to put them in a cooler with a cold pack, if there is any chance they will get above 75 degrees in the car.

Rather than buy a critter keeper, I would use a clean 1-quart yogurt tub or Kool-whip tub, or ice cream tub, or Tupperware... whatever you have around the house. Just poke a few holes for air (they don't need much).

Take care that the coolpack is not so cold at first that the newts get stuck to it, as I have seen happen

You could avoid this by wrapping the coolpack in a layer of paper towel or something. And be careful that the contents of the cooler don't shift and squash your newts

i have a TON of those small plastic critter keepers, the ones that are about 6 inches long by 4 inches wide. i used to keep fish fry in them when i was breeding them.

i think i'll pack them with wet paper towels in separate critter keepers, then put the 2 critter keepers into a box with frozen water bottles and some crumpled newspaper to help prevent shifting. that way, they'll have plenty of air, the bottles will help keep them cool, and there wont be anything but paper towels in the critter keepers so i wont have to worry about crushing them.

the bottles probably wont cool them too much, but the car shouldnt get hotter than 75* anyway. i'll put them in a "shaded" spot (not right up against the window) and make sure the ac is on in the backseat. i usually keep my car pretty cool tho.

thanks guys, i'll let you know how the trip goes
