Handling newts

I just got a Chinese Fire Bellied Newt, and I read that you should never handle them. I've already handled mine a little, and I'm wondering if I should stop that. Is it ok if I handle him a bit?

Yes it's ok to handle it a bit. Most newts get stressed out though that's why you shouldn't handle them too much. Also their skin is very sensitive(to "stuff" on your skin..) and they are toxic you know so be sure to wash your hands afterwards!

There is no reason to handle newts, and does not benefit the newt, only stresses it. Newts are like fish, a pet to watch, not to cuddle.

Yes... I agree with A J J... they only get stressed and you also don't do anything... they will never get used to it... maybe with a Pogona vitticeps or a Green Lizard, you can, but not with newts.

Hmmm, I might have been misunderstood there...
I didn't mean handle like in "let's play with our newt". I meant that your newt will be stressed out when you catch it - so you shouldn't do it if it is not "necessary".

However I don't think that one needs to be overzealous.... For example when transferring the newt from one cage to another I think it is ok to use your hands - I know some people here are more cautious than me though.

Thank you all very much, I only handled Sebastian when moving him into his tank, but I'll keep that all in mind. Thanks Again!

You'll be able to tell right away if your newt doesn't like to be handled. They'll try to get away.

hi everyone i did,nt see any of you say that you must wet your hands first before handling newts it does help . otherwise you might harm them due to your sweat that contains salt and other toxins that could harm newts .i only handle my newts when chaging there water which takes only a few seconds cheers justin
