Hi - I need some advise on how to feed the salamander my daughter just found. Its about 3" long, black with a bluish stripe down it's back. It was found in the moist dirt underneath a planter in our yard. Any ideas on what type of salamander this is?? Also what will it eat? bugs, worms, grubs??? Also is it okay to put in a tank with 2 small frogs (frogs are @ size of bottom of 8 oz glass). The tank has half sand and half 2" of water. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!!

live crickets are a great feeder as are fruitflies. You can order starter fruitfly cultures online as well as smaller crickets. You can also collect smaller bugs and worms from outside but try to only use bugs with a fairly soft exoskeleton like wood lice. Definitely DO NOT house with the frogs!

THANKS for the help. Just curious why would they not get along well with the frogs?

Any pictures of the salamander will greatly help us to figure out what species of salamander it is.

Very interesting site... the salamander's stripe is yellow, not bluish like I thought earlier - and it's a Long-toed Salamander. Thanks for help/info!

I think it is a Three Lined Salamander just by the thought of a yellow line.

Can you post a picture, as far as I'm concerned long-toed salamanders are rare. Maybe you were just lucky.
