Change in newt's skin

I have three Taricha granulosa newts: Medium (6+ years), Large (~2 years), and Small (1 year). I noticed that when the smallest one goes into water, there is a shiny/metalic coating on the skin...is this bacteria-related? or normal? I believe that a second one has it now too.

Also, all three of my newts have been hiding in their hid-out for several days...is this normal for Summer-time? I bought the hide-out and the larger and smaller newts this year, so I'venot been able to see them together last Summer.

If anyone has any information, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
Krystin

Hi Krystin,

The shiny coating is probably just tiny bubbles trapped on the surface of the skin. If it goes away after a little while this is usually the case. As far as the hiding goes I couldn't say. I had torosas several years ago and they never hid.

Thanks Jim.

two of them came out of hiding when I put food in the water...maybe they're just lazy.

The smallest one has had the shiny coating for a few months. Maybe it's shedding time? It did rub it's head/face against a rock.

Thanks again!
Krystin

All three of my newts are hiding still (second week). And all three have the shiny coating...my father did some reading online and suggests that it's from the water. Should I be using any type of bottled water?

After finding a snail in the tank, I thoroughly cleaned the tank. It appears that the shiny/matalic coating of their skin has disappeared! Yay! I guess it just needed a good cleaning.
