Stinky Water

Um... Ok so this is probably a dumb question, but your knowledge would help alot. My water doesn't smell very pleasant and I was wondering if that odor could beneficial bacteria. Is it good to have this smell? Also how often and when should you change a carbon filter? I'm gonna test my water today and I'll post the results here so you can give me better info.

Ok so I got it tested today and everything was normal except there was no ammonia and the nitrate reading was very very high. Um... I'm not quite sure what to do about this so suggestions would be nice.

Water changes. The smell can be reduced through carbon filtration but regular 15% water changes can also prevent it from happening.

Right now try doing 10% water changes/day until the nitrate readings drop below 20 ppm and see if that changes how the tank smells.

Ok could it also be that my carbon filter has no more oomph? How long do those usually last?

It depends on how much stuff is getting dissolved in the tank... I typically change it anywhere from every other week in high bioload systems (such as turtles) to every other month...
