FB Newts + FB Toad = ??

Hey group...

Iv read extensivly on the topic, firebelly newts living with a firebelly toad, and have two conflicting views, one says its ok, the other says its not.

I started off with 4 FBN's, one died after abit of a fight with the others, within the first month of keeping them... That was over 6 months ago now, and my local pet shop now has FB toads in, the lady at the shop said it was ok to keep the two species together, my new plan is 3 FBN with 1 FBT.

What is the groups opinion on this? The articles say its not recommended, I just wandered if anybody had any positive (or negative) experiences?

Thank you!

i must admit a very long time ago i did keep these same two species together in a large 4 foot tank with water in the middle and a bank at either end of the tank. They were in there for three years and basically left to get on with it. Both species bred regularly and got on well ,there was never any problems apart from the newts eating most of the eggs and tadpoles, thier own and the toads,I know most ,If not all the other replies you get will tell you to avoid it and i would'nt do it myself now but as i said i never had any problems .

Thanks for your advice Ian,

After first hand knowledge, like your own, I think its not going to be a very good idea to keep the two together, considering my tank is only half the size of yours as well.

Again, thanks for the help!

If you had a really big tank I think that would be a really cool setup, a bunch of different firebellies!

My bombinas used to be at a classmate´s house, in a tank with three C.orientalis. Nothing ever happened, but i never liked him keeping them together. I also recommend to keep them separated....you may never have any problem at all...but if you do, you´ll regret not buying the extra tank hehe. Also, keeping them separated allows you to personalize the tanks more for each species. Bombinas will be fine with 5cm of water, while cynops will love a depth of 20-25.
anyway, best of lucks with them

both are really cool species.

These two species also have different temperature requirements.

One thing to remember when getting advice for mixing, just think who benefits from it. Less experienced people who have a shop are often keen to encourage you.

I think mixing only really works when a lot of space is involved, much more than i would recommend the minimum for each species. (ie. it wouldn't save on space)

Ok I have a question Regarding Temp. of the tank. I know that you don"t really want to go above 73 Degrees or so for a Firebelly Newt tank, BUT how cold can you go?

as cold as you want, as long as the water dosnt start to freeze

yes as Dane says they can stand it pretty cold.I kept mine in the garage and the water temp went down to 2 degrees, but when they were in the same tank as the fire bellied toads they were kept at a steady
20 degrees and still bred without hibernating.
