A redback just got swept into our basement from all the rain. I live in a 1700s house with original stone foundation (no cement). I usually get earthworms in but this is the first redback. I examined it and it is moving but the back legs don't seem to be moving nearly as much as the front. I put it back outside in the dirt/grass next to my door. It wasn't trying to get away when I held it or when I put it down. It's been outside in the same spot for the last 5 - 10 minutes. temperatures have also dropped...I have light snow on the ground. What should I do? Should I bring it in and set up a little makeshift tank for it until it warms up or leave it alone outside? Please answer quickly. Thanks!

I think you should take it in and put it in a small container with some wet papertowels on the bottom.

I know, this storm is pretty strong! Maybe I'll find some redbacks after the rain.

After leaving it outside for over 2 hours it has barely moved. So, I put it in a mini spare tank with moss and a paper towel roll for it to bury itself in. It is trying to bury itself but seems to be having a hard time.

It also has white stuff coming out of it's bottom area. Poop? What does salamander blood look like? I'm a bit worried for the poor creature.

He's in a room that has no heat on but is warmer than outside. I figure I'll leave him alone until I feed everyone else which is at about 8pm and then see if he'll eat something. Hopefully. he'll still be alive.

Thanks, Ryan, for the suggestion.

Comments or suggestions are very welcomed at this point.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, he passed away. I think he had some type of puncture wound. At least it died in a nice warm environment.

, he or she was probably in a lot of pain and now he or she is now a rest. Don't be to down on your self, you did every thing you could.

Thanks! I took pictures when it was still alive....before putting it outside so I'll have the memories. At least I now know I have redbacks as well as marbled newts on the property. He must have been pretty far underground to come in through the basement.

Thanks for the help, Ryan and Dane!

You mean Marbled Salamanders, not Marbled Newts right?
