Hi all,
I have a golden albino axolotl "Jupiter" for 2yrs now. All has been fine since the weekend. She's became bloated, swimming tail up. I took her to the vet hospital (sunday morning) & the vet who deals with exotic creatures was in, but didn't know much about axie's at all. Tho she gave me antibiotics to treat her orally every 2nd day for 5 treatments to lessen her bloatedness & get her balance right.
I came across this forum, as I thought i needed more information on her condition. As with others who have been in the same position, I have placed her in the fridge.
She last pooped saturday night. Tho, I haven't seen her eat in a while, as she's left the food in the tank.
I didn't hav a heater for her, so i have recently bought her a heater to check the tank temperature (as previously she was in a position not directly in the sun, but it was a warmer position as now - since i moved).
I have tested the water, pH=7 NO2=0.25... is that ok?
so, I'm trying to get the tank right before I place back in there, while she's in the fridge.
But you know what.. I don't think the antibiotics or the fridge thing is showing any signs of improvement, coz now, she's constantly belly up.
this has got me totally stressed out & worried.. but I'm sure Jupiter is feeling it more than I.
Does anyone have any suggestions.. or know of a vet in the Melbourne, Australia area who deals with axie's...
it's totally heart breaking seeing her in this condition.. I just want her better. I come 2 work, but my mind is on her...
is it too late?
please help..

Axolotls dont need heaters, what tempature is it there? Keep it as cool as possible.

the temp varies in the low teens.. at room temperature, so i bought a heater that is controlled with a thermo to keep the tank at a constant temperature all year round.
throughout winter, it's been cold as, especially in the room where she's kept. But i didn't think this would cause any problems, but the vet mentioned to keep the tank temp constant & so did the lady at the pet store.
so the idea was to keep it at around 16-18, with the literature I've read varies the temp between 14-20.
shouldn't I do this?

do what you like, but dont let the temperature rise more higher than the recemmended tempurature for axolotls, and take the advice the vet said keep the tempurature constant, constant changes of the temp could stress an axolotl.

I would say no, don't use the heater. My axolotls are at around 8-9C during the winter and they are healthy and happy. Their temperature is fairly stable. Does your aquarium have major temp fluctuations? Has the bloating improved from the treatment?
