Ammonia in the water

Is there a maximum level of ammonia for a healthy caudate aquarium (if so how many ppm?), or should NO ammonia be detected?
Thanks.

If your aquarium has been properly cycled before putting in your caudate, there should be no ammonia as there will be significant amounts of bacteria to ultimately turn it to nitrite. The nitrite is a gas and thus dissipates into the air.

check out this article on caudata culture for a little more info.

Thanks for the link.
No caudates yet (still in the 'hunting' process).
I think, in this case, I should wait until no traceable ammonia?
Thanks
