What substrate should I use?

Greetings from Singapore! I am new here.

I am deciding what to use as substrate.
Any suggestion? gravels? sand? none?

BTW, would it be safe if I use a algae eater...which does not have spiky fins?
I am aware that spiky ones would hurt newt if consumed.

Hi Douglas,
In general I personally do not use any substrate on the bottom of the tank although other people use sand or gravel that is too large for the newts to ingest.

Currently I am not using any for them. Just wondering if I should....

BTW, regarding the algae eater fish.... it was gone, I think it became food....http://www.caudata.org/forum/clipart/frog.gif
