View Full Version : My new pleuro tank

It's 120cm wide housing 6 adult pleuro's.
There is no land area, but there are a few spots where they can hang and put their nose out of the water. I used to have a small landarea, but they didn't use it.
Pictures are a bit of poor quality, reflections... I didn't even dare to post the picture that shows the tank entirely. I'll have to take a new one. But here's something allready:

That looks like a great tank. They look like they enjoy the drainage pipe. I keep mine entirely aquatic and it suits them fine.

Sometimes there are 4 pleuro's in that pipe at the same time. The other pipe is more like a cave as the backside is blocked. I often find one or two in there as well. But strangely enough, most of the time they hang out in the front, in the open area. (maybe because there they get their food http://www.caudata.org/forum/clipart/wink.gif)

maybe you can cover the pipe with mosses to enhance the look !?!

Cool display!! But one pleuro is so thin!

Thank you Rafael. Indeed I have one very thin pleuro, but there are other features I find strange in him. Either something went wrong geneticly or he just isn't pleurodeles waltl. Maybe a mixed breed with poireti or so. I don't know, I could use some specialists on him http://www.caudata.org/forum/clipart/happy.gif
Alex, good idea. I planned to do that, but I didn't have enough moss. For now there is a small quantity on the left pipe and that will cover the pipe in time. The other pipe will have to wait for moss a bit longer.
Also, I took a new picture of the tank entirely.

The banner on top is to protect our eyes from the lightning that is there. And to make it look better I added some pictures of our dog Simba http://www.caudata.org/forum/clipart/happy.gif

Thanks,I think it will be more beautiful once the plants have grown a bit and algae covered the white parts. You can see that happen already a bit.
Alex, nothing is wrong with his eating behaviour.
Here's a picture of him I once posted before. As you can see he's skinny, but not in a 'sick' way. He's just different.

In the wild I would hate it too. But here I got inspired by a tank Paris once made. I wanted shelters for the pleuro's that weren't to heavy (I move out next winter, so no stones) and I also still wanted to see the pleuro's. If I now see how much they use them, I don't think they're bothered with them.
It does stay a strange sight. Paris used black ones in a terrestiral setup with lot's of green. That looked less awkward http://www.caudata.org/forum/clipart/happy.gif

I have to say that thin newt does have some strange proportions, look at those biceps! I didn't know newts could grow muscles like that, does he lift weights or some thing?

That's not biceps; male pleuro's grow dark red / brownish 'biceps' during mating season. Like other salamanders grow a crest or get colour on their tail.
ps: maybe he is powerlifting, and that explains why he's so skinny - he burns more calories http://www.caudata.org/forum/clipart/happy.gif
