Help IDing... C. pyrrhogaster or C. orientalis?

Hi Christina,
can we get some more pics from different angles as well as belly-shots?

Looks like a female orientalis that spends a lot of her time on land.

I did check out the two pages, but my ID was still uncertain, hence the post.

I'm hoping it's a female orientalis, I already have a pretty well-established male in another aquarium that I'd like to introduce "her" to. Compared to my male, his/her tail is quite longer and "pointier," and the skin is rougher.

I'll post some more pics by this weekend (busy with exams this week) of his/her belly and a better body shot, as well as some of my male orientalis for comparison.

Female orientalis have thinner and pointier tales than males do. Males have a shorter, blunter, more paddle shaped tail.

I believe it is a Orientalis also. Just like one of my female orientalis. She is breeding in a tank with only one orientalis male and two other female that look more like orientalis. So if she is breeding, she probably is an orientalis too. And your just look like mine.

This is very encouraging

Here's a shot of Magma's underside (hands washed and rinsed thoroughly before very brief handling):

And here are a couple of my male orientalis (95% certain of species and sex):

His much wider tail is very noticeable in the first pic. His underside looks very similar to Magma's, but his skin seems smoother. His SVL is about 4 cm, and he's almost completely aquatic.

I cast my vote for orientalis, but he is certainly a dark red if its not the camara.
I may be wrong about the gender but I put my money on male.

This is a good shot of the diffrences, allthough a very diffrent species http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Triturus/Triturus_sp.shtml

not showing up as a link, interesting. Paste it

If I may borrow a classic line from Nate, "nice orientalis"

(sorry, bit of an inside joke there...)

Hmm... Sorry Jeff, but after looking at the Triturus venters, I'm leaning more towards female, myself. Magma has little of a cloacal bump, "her" tail is narrow as Joseph pointed out, and "her" body is more rounded caudally compared to my male.

What feature(s) is(are) screaming "male" to you? Are you thinking maybe it's an immature male?
