As long as the snails are bigger than the axolotl's head there "should" be no trouble. I currently have 2 apple snails about 1.5 inch wide with 2 adult axies and there is no trouble, I tried with smaller ones and they vanished (in the axie's stomach).
I have an adult apple snail in with my adult axolotls, and Cuddles has been just fine
They tend to huff at the snail a bit, but snails quickly get used to this.
Axolotl ARE good at eliminating small snails however, so keep in mind John's comment.
hey guys, keeping in mind the above advice...we bought 3 golden snails for the tank yesterday. The smallest one was 2cm across, the largest about 3cm. When we awoke this morning...2 of the 3 had disappeared! Our axies aren't very big only about 12 and 15cm long. We are clearly going to have to find some BIG snails to keep the slime down...
