Worms

Hi im going to hand feed my axies, but i dont think my shop sell live worms. i would like to feed them these and dont fancy catching wild ones and cleaning it. anything from the wild that would be ok? also, does it definatly not hurt if an axie bites you, even a big one?

Adelle, wild worms are fine if they're collected from some area without pesticides and fertilizers.

Also, if your local pet shop doesn't sell earthworms, try a bait shop or something similar. They usually have worms.

Axolotls do not have 'teeth' as we know them. They have a vomerine ridge, which is like a bumpy piece of bone in their mouth. Their 'bites' are startling because they're usually very sudden, but it's not painful in the least. It's quite funny once you get used to it.

I bought 0.5kg of earthworms from www.wormsdirectuk.co.uk about a month ago and there's still loads left and my axies love them! But beware they climb out at night so you need an air tight container. I have mine in a large compost bag (or council recycling bag) and tie it up with a freezer bag clip at the top and have this in a plastic container with lid on. I open it up every day for a bit to let the air in and what not, add some compost and some vegetable/potato peelings and a bit of water (or damp strips of newspaper) now and then to keep it moist. They still climb up on the side of the bag and some small ones still escape somehow but at least you can just pick them off the side of the bag inside and don't have to rummage around in the mud! They were delivered next day via Royal Mail when I ordered at lunch time - clearly labelled 'LIVE WORMS'. Hope this is helpful.
