I came back from a weekend trip last night, and when I check the water of my axolotl, it was 29°C!!!!! She was in the bottom, didnt move, didnt eat, and seems blind!! It seems that dhe has something white in her eyes, and her skin in the tail and in a part of the head is weird...
I just dont know what to do!!! When I got her in the petshop, nobody told me about this temperature thing.. And I live in Brasil, very hot here now...
Please, any tip to help me???

Thanks in advance

Richard,

Take you axolotl out of the tank, put it in a food safe container with some fresh dechlorinated water and then put her in the fridge. The fridge is the best place for stressed ill axolotls. Axolotls can not handle high temperatures and like the cold. I would recommend you either get a chiller for your tank or use the ice bottle / ice pack method to try to bring your temp down.
Has you tank been cycled? You need to check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH levels of your tank if you didn't know this already. Your pet shop should be able to test these for you otherwise get yourself some testing kits.
Nitrite & Ammonia should = 0, Nitrate should be no higher than 20. PH levels should be as close to neutral as possible.
As to the problems with her skin and eyes it could be a fungal infection...try giving her salt baths each day for no more than 10 minutes at a time and see if this helps. I would not take her out of the fridge until you know your tank is safe and she seems to be feeling better.
Check out the Axolotl site page for information on tank cycling and axolotl health as this may help you.
Anyone else have more ideas for Richard????

Richard - I too recommend putting the axolotl in the fridge. Keep spare decholorinated water in the fridge so you have it to change her water with and if you need to do salt baths.

Salt baths are 2 teaspoons of salt dissolved in 2 liters of water. Soak for 10 -12 min, twice a day.

While the axolotl is in the fridge keep its water clean, change the water daily if need be.

Try and avoid sudden temperature swings, put her in the fridge and keep her there until she is well.

She will be slow in the fridge, she may not eat as often. Offer her food daily when you are attending to her water.

You should read http://www.axolotl.org/
for lots of basic axolotl info and in http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/articles.shtmlthere are a lot of articles (one on tank cycling) you should check out.

Pet shops claim another victim!

Don't worry Richard your not the first person to be neglected by a pet shop.

Your at the right place now. Follow Suzanne and Cynthia's advice and you should be ok.
