my Q is simple: do axies need to breath at the surface ? why im asking is because i want to make an aqua-terraium

with my axies down in the water but i dont want the upper animals to been eating, so maybe i could make something smart but i have to know if they have to breath..
 
I would say that they do need to have the option of breathing at the surface. Some axolotls breathe at the surface more than others. For example, my 13 year old takes a lot of air at the surface, but in his younger days when his gills were larger he didn't do this nearly so much.
I'm not sure that I can picture your planned set-up , but I hope this helps.
