When I bought "mike" the fish guy told me to get beef heart so I did, but now i've read that this should only be a treat.
At the moment all I have other than that is what my tropical fish eat and I also have some shrimp pellets, are these ok??
What other pellets or food should I get for him at the pet store the next time I am there?

Can you get Earthworms? These are a good stable for Axolotls. Crushed Egg shells added to their soil helps keep them in check with Calcium too

Or I think powdered Calcium is ok from petstores to use, but I am not sure on that. So far I have just been using powered/crushed egg shells.

I'm going to start trying to feed raw Calamari to my Axolotls too. If they except it good, than after they have their earthworms then they can have that as dessert ;)

My guy loves shrimp pellets, and i give him blood worms about once a week as a treat. Other than that, my lfs recommended turtle sticks. Can anyone let me know if this is good? i mean, ash has been eating them as a staple for about three months now, so it may be a little late to ask, lol, but better now than never...
I'm waiting til Ash gets a little bigger, and then I think i'm lookin at ordering the pellets from the Indiana (Kentucky) Axie place.

P.S. Rheann, what do you keep your earthworms in? I think Ash is big enough to take 'em now...

Amanda - I keep my worms in a Glade Tupper-wear with holes poked into the top so the worms can breath and so some ventilation gets through so the dirt doesn't mold.

I make sure to wash the eggshells really well, and afterwards I dry them off. The eggshells are for the calcium. Once they are dry I put them in a small plastic bowl and start crushing it with a Hammer in a circular motion. I don't have a petchel, so this works for the time being

I smash the shells into a fine powder until it looks something like Flour.

I think Joan uses a zip-lock bag and smashes it that way. I tried that but it doesn't work too well for me lol.

You can add other things to the soil like Buesquick or dried mashed potatoes, but be careful there is some ventilation and not too much in the soil otherwise the soil sort of molds

Then I just pop everything into the fridge. I keep about 30 worms at a time. I don't breed them my self.

You can get other pellets meant for axolotl usage at the axolotl colony website.

I bake my eggshells first to cut down risk of salmonella and E. coli. When they're hot, they're a lot easier to smash.

Turtle sticks are not the best food for axolotls. Definately try earthworms, pellets, waxworms, bloodworms, blackworms, any worms (except maybe tubifex or any of the biting 'worms').

Cool, thanks guys! I live on the coast, and in a compost friendly area, so I should be able to get some earthworms really easily. And yeah, before I found out anything about axies, Ash was living off of nothing but Tubifex worms for his first two months. I think it fattened him up, but we're on to healthier things now! Speaking of which...

After I thought about how Ash could probably take an earthworm, I decided to order the small axolotl pellets from the colony. My guys isn't actually "small" anymore, and I just had to realize that he's growing up, sniff.. But I'll let you know how it goes when they get here!
