Wild behaviour

I have noticed a couple of 'wild' behaviours and was thinking it might be interesting to discuss what behaviours everyones axies have kinda like pet psychology.

1. We all know about the see it eat it snatch and grab axie instinct

2. I have noticed that when I feed worms to them they seem to draw their eyes in (I think sharks do this too to protect the eyes from pray)

3. When they are in 'hunt mode' they move very slowly and deliberatley normaly with their heads

Deaky is the type of axie thats always on the hunt and seems to sit in what I call the crocodile posture (body straight head up front feet slightly off the ground)

anyone noticed any other natural behaviours that dont indicate that they are sick?

Frogs and toads use their eyeballs to force food down their necks - they can't swallow like we can. Axies with large food items appear to do the same thing but I'm not sure if it is the same.

When Shifter is in hunt mode he does the stand up slightly thing as well

interesting about the swallowing food thing (maybe I should give smaller worms lol)I wonder if thats what it is ?? It would be good to know for sure I will look it up n let you know.

Yup, they do use the eyes to help push food down - it's a 'phib thing. Try using a soft bait pellet, and you'll see it clear as day.

I have been looking into getting the soft pellets (as i am sure i am going to hell ...poor little worms) but am not too sure about where toget them in uk (suggestions greatly appriciated)On behaviour note - NUDGING - is this just a male behaviour or do aall axies love it as nadia loves nuding poor little deaky all over the tank and I am sure nadia is a she - any how I am waiting for a moss ball in the post to see if she will take to this instead - anyone elses females nudge?? I think she has eggs so maybe shes just desparate

Soft pellets are easily purchased at fishing stores - may I reccommend SwimStim Amino 5mm. They go down very well with axies over 5".

Nudging - I've noticed that a lot between my pair. I always put things in for them to shuffle around and move - like pingpong balls, big pebbles, marimo moss balls, and just recently my freshwater mussel, medallion.

(Note: only keep one mussel per tank, as the babies "glychodia" are parasitic.)

Yea they used to do that to bob (fresh water mussel) but since I got sand he buries himself so they cannot do that anymore cannot wait for the moss ball might buy a ping pong ball (thanks for the advice on food i will look for some over the weekend)

Not a problem.

If you pop two holes in it with a pin or needle (be careful!) and very gently squeeze it under water, it will fill and sink.

Play about with a small bubble of air inside to get some buoyancy - it will "hop" along, and they will LOVE to snap at it to see it fly away.

Ondine gets too fat with food occassionally and goes up to get air bubbles more frequently (every couple of minutes)

He also seems to yawn underwater. Anyone else's do this?

Yup, yawning is perfectly normal. For the same reason as us humans! Bubble catching is "swallowing" air to use in the lungs.

If he seems to yawn or bubble catch excessively, it may be an indicator of a problem in your tank.

To help with oxygenation, you might want to put an airstone in your tank - axolotl love to play with these anyway, snapping at bubbles, riding the bubbles and generally messing about... with bubbles! :D

Hey kewl! That's a nice one too! Have they started playing with it yet?

They just sit on it at the mo - too lazy me thinks I have just introduced a shot glass for them to eat out of as suggested in your blog (amber) sunken into the sand its a real hit especially with deaky (obsessed with food)I have bought a pingpong ball and will put pin holes in today I will let you know how it goes down

also added a shelf for freckles that has gone down a treat (will try and get pics to show you)he bobs underneath it ...hangs from the side attacks the java moss i was hoping to train to grow on it

tends to use it as a blank it or chuck it of the shelf ITS NEVER GOING TO GROW AT THIS RATE!!! oh well its fun for him
