Finally it's cool enough in the basement to let my axie out from the fridge, after 3-4 months of 11*C spa with daily vitamins

Lotl was in pretty bad shape in June with red sores on her tummy, a very bloated belly, no appetite what so ever and poor fecies. I really thougt she was dieing

Now she is good as new exept from a gill damage from an otocinclus incident earlier this year.

I'm looking forward to a new season with my Lotl

Excuse my ignorance, but I have read quite a few posts that refer to putting axies in the fridge! What is this all about?

Axies can tolerate quite low temperatures. Putting them in a cool place makes their metabolism slow down, and the hole animal becomes drowsy (I think). This allows sick axies to recover and relax. Since you shouldn't keep axolotls at temperatures above 20*C for a long time, I had to do this through the summer as the coolest place in the house was 26*C. My axie became quite stressed so I made her a summer residents in the extra fridge down stairs. I kept control of the temperature and turned up the "heat" in the fridge from 4*C to 11*C. I didn't want the animal to hibernate or anything

If axies are placed in temperatures below 10*C they will not accept food as it will rotten in their stomach because of the slow metabolism.

I'm sorry, but I don't know how to translate *C to *F

Most New Zealanders and Aussies tend to deal in Celcius rather than Fahrenheit. I always have to check the conversion site when working things out in fahrenheit!

Great to hear she is doing well again and good that the weather is starting to cool down a bit (for Lotl's benefit anyway!)

Oh okay, interesting. What exactly do you put them in when you put them in the fridge, just a container or something?

Kapo: You never know how things work out on the other side of the planet (which in my case is somewhere between NZ and Antarctica

By the way, I love chilly weather

Anna: I use two containers, one with the axie, the other with new fresh water. This makes it quite easy to do water changes with no fluctuating temperatures. I keep the lid on in case she would jump out, but with a gap so she doesn't choke...

Pardon me, but I'm just curious: How can you be a Kiwi? Is it a place? I thought it was a bird/fruit..?

\My grandfather served in WWI & said NZ soldiers were known as kiwis (can't remember why) just as English were known as pommies/poms/pome then (prisoner/s of mother england). We still use the term to describe ourselves kiwis or NZers both here at home and abroad!

Anyway, back to subject (sorry Ed!). Have you got any photos of Lotl since his return? He must be happier back in his tank. I'm dreading the weather if it gets too hot here for our axies, but know if the usual methods don't work we have spare fridge which we can use for our axies.
