It depends on the configuration. You can put less in a high tank than a low (breeder) tank. I'd say 5 or 6 adults in 40 gallon with a good biological filter. The broken rule of thumb is a little more than 1 per 10 gallons.

Ok thanks it is a high. I am probably going to end up having 4 so it should be fine.

I have almost no current just a small wisper filter and the tank has been established for 4 weeks I am not planning on getting another for atleast another month. Is that long enough to establish a good biological filter?
