Prawns

I was just wondering whether prawns are a good food for my axie. They are thawed by the way.

ummm...

so do I remove the shell first and then give it to them or do I give it to them with the shell. (but they will be cut into pieces)
And would it be ok to give it to them regularly or just once in a while.
p.s. sorry bout all the questions it's just that i'm sorta new to Axolotls.

Well, I've never used prawns, mussels or fish fillet like some have, only cos the husband would kill me as they're his treat! (Ours get earthworms or occasional beef/sheepheart strips). But I would remove the shell and give the soft meaty bit. Maybe just as an occasional treat. Better that you ask, I had millions of questions when we first started out, but I searched the forum and thankfully found most of my answers! Axies were a big learning curve for me considering I didn't want them at first and had never kept goldfish or amphibians.

well I had fish before but that's different coz an axie isn't a fish it's an amphibian. Well i'll see if he wants to eat it first if he doesn't i'll find something else for it to eat.
Oh and are earthworms from the bait shop ok for an axie.

bait shop earthworms are fine. Let me know how your axie goes with the prawns, I was thinking of maybe trying them too.

k I will but i'll try after he gets moved into the new tank.

Are prawns that are a bit over 1 month old ok?
(they are frozen)

um.. I just gave my axie a bit of prawn. It seemed quite interested in it and ate it straight away. but a few seconds after it ate the prawn it started jerking side to side and going spaatic. It did this twice but then it stopped so I was just wondering whether this is normal or not.
Would it be because the piece of prawn was a bit too big?

Does it usually do this when its eating? How big a piece of prawn did you give? Maybe just do thin bits - cut it up in thin strips. Tho our larger axies when we first got them when they ate their eyes would bulge in and out and their throats/mouth jerk abit as they were swallowing, I freaked out when I first saw it happen and thought something was wrong; as I had never noticed it with our then smaller axies (12-15cm). Its more noticeable now as they've gotten bigger, they do that all the time when feeding esp. when they eat the worms.

Well no it doesn't usually do that. The prawn was probably a bit less then a cm thick and it was probably a cm wide. My axie's a bit less than 14 cm long.
But I normally feed it Axolotl pellets so I'm not too sure. And the pellets are tiny.
I asked my friend if her axie has done it before and she says that she thinks it has. So I'm sorta worrying about if I should let it have any prawn.

Hello.

I feed my two axies a small bit of prawn once a week and they seem to love it. the rest of the diet is mainly beef heart or bloodworms (though i hate bloodworms cause they are so messy in the water)

PS - Ive had Bob N Willy for over a year now and they are doing great on this diet.

but how big is the prawn you feed it because I think my bit was a bit too big

I sometimes give mine fresh prawns too, I haven't tried frozen ones. They seem to like them. I cut a slice of prawn about 2mm thick - as thin as I can make it without it going too messy, if the prawn if fat I also cut it in half. As long as they can swallow it it seems to be ok. My axies are all about 20cm long. I also give them worms, pellets, sheep heart because I haven't found any beef yet, and whatever we are having for dinner if there is nothing else available.

most of my fish and axies get prawns or shrimp in their diet, all cut to their mouth size of course

well then probably the piece that I gave it was a bit too big. I might give it a smaller piece right now. I also want to know if an axie is moved into a bigger tank does it not seem to move for a while and not eat.

Yes when they move to another tank/new owner they can take a couple of days settle down. Also, remember as your axie gets bigger, it won't necessarily swim or be as active as when it was smaller/younger (apart from maybe feeding time!) How often are you feeding yours?

practically every day but i didn't feed it that much when I moved it to another tank coz it didn't want to eat.

I give my axies prawns shell on ,cut up in pieces about 2cm big no heads as they do have spines, they love the prawns.
