[okay some people know this one.}my cat always to attack my 2 axelotls{now its 1 my cat ate the other 1.}

tape the lid shut and put heavy objects on top of the lid.

I do not know if they are available in Australia but here in the USA, you can get epoxy covered screen lids for the tanks that can be secured with cage clips. If you use filters then holes can be cut into the screen and the clips will keep the lid closed. Another good simple item that can be used are the rubber straps that are used to hold cargo down (aka bungee cords here in the Eastern USA).

I found a cheap alternative that I use if propping open the lid and cooling the water surface with a fan. You can get "Guttering Mesh" from most hardware stores. Plastic mesh of various sizes that comes by the roll. I bought a 10 meter roll for just $1.75. It's only 18 cm wide though but it can be over-lapped and tied with plastic twist ties or "sewed" together quite easily. You can also get "Bird Mesh" (a bit like fishing net) at hardware stores which is designed to keep birds out of fruit trees etc. and that comes in all sorts of dimensions. It would certainly stop cats from getting into tanks too.
Here is a link to a pic of the stuff I am talking about:http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.internetplastic.com/images/oriented/XV-1347.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.internetplastic.com/home.html&h=100&w=100&sz=10&tbnid=bbqePrOq_7O8nM:&tbnh=77&tbnw=77&hl=en&start=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dguttering%2Bmesh%26start%3D100%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN
