When i feed my axolotls bloodworms, I always use my hands to pick them up to transfer them into a container. I used to use my net but they got REALLY stressed out with it. I just wanted to know if using hands is ok
As long as your hands are really clean, and you're sure there is no residue of anything on them, and they're wet, and you're quick, then yes. That's how I move my axolotls. I found that they're less freaked out when supported in my hand than swinging freely in the net.
Yeh that true Joan. Ive noticed that not only this huge net coming their way freaks them out (by the motion of the water), but swaying there not supported must freak them out too.
I still use the net - coz they are too fast moving for me, or maybe im too slow LOL
I just cup one of my hands underneath the net, so they feel supported enough not too be too scared.
You can also use a large jar to catch the axolotls and just cover the mouth with your hand. The mouth of the jar is set in front of the axolotl and then the axolotl is gently moved into the jar, the jar is covered and then it can be lifted out of the tank with a minimum of stress (similar to how salt water fish are caught in some pet stores using the plastic viewers).
