Kate's decided that she wants to turn into a salamander now. Her body and head shape's been changing for a while, and she has a strange interest in the surface of the water, which the others don't. She used to sit on top of the power filter with the top of her head out of the water, but then I got rid of the power filter. Now she sits on top of the duckweed instead. I'm setting up another tank with levels, etc for her to go into.
All water conditions are normal, and I've never added any chemicals or hormones to the water in an attempt to force her to change. I had always thought that domestic axies had pretty much had the ability to change into salamanders bred out of them...

It seems some still do. When axolotls were first introduced, they had been interbred with Tiger sals to produce some of the color morphs (especially albinos. All albinos are descended from this pair). Being that they still have some remnants of these Tiger genes, occasionally you get one that morphs. Be excited, as this is a one in 10,000 or so occurance!

what kind of changes are happening? that would be pretty exciting except for not knowing what to do. good luck i hope everything goes well.

Thanks. My mum once had one axie who tried to morph, but died half-way through the process.
The only advise I've been given is to set up another tank with levels in it, so that she can climb out of the water if she wants to.
I don't have any close-up pics at the moment, but I'll try to get some on the weekend.
Also, Kate's fin, allong her back is getting smaller, and while on the others, it starts just behind the head, hers doesn't start until a bit further down her back.
Oh, and would it be alright to keep one of my other axies with her in her new tank(once it's finished cycling that is)???

cool i want an axie that morphs i would want elli to morph because she is fine the way she is but if i was you Rita i would be well excited good luck

I am quite excited about it, I just don't quite know what I'm supposed to do with a salamander!! lols

Well, first off they're terrestrial! lol. Other than that, you keep them the same as an axolotl, just on land. Clean dirt, places to hide, feed worms.

Can't wait to see what Kate looks like

I'll get some as soon as Kate holds still long enough!!!
She's camera shy. lols

i hope everything goes well for you. if it does decide to morphg you'll probably be one of the only people in Australia to have a salamander thing.... lol. its too bad australia doesnt allow salamanders or newts into the country even just as pets only under special circumstances for research. good luck again.

"its too bad australia doesnt allow salamanders or newts into the country"<!-/quote-!>

how come?

Hayley, think of the problems Aus. has with rabbits, bullfrogs, the cane toad, etc. I wouldn't let anything in either, after the problems they've had already.

Yay!! I can move Kate into her new tank tommorrow!!! Anyone know if it's alright if I keep one of my other axies in with her??

I don't think it would be a problem, especially if they've lived together before.

Rita, I look forward to seeing pictures of her

I loved Morphed Axolotls, but I hope all of mine stay aquatic because I really love to watch them swim and play together.
have you visited this page? http://www.axolotl.org/tiger_salamander.htm
I like the set-up they have for tiger salamanders at the end of the page, dirt, cover, little house

I also love the tiger salamander's faces and the Axolotl's faces after they morph, they have big grins

so cute!

Mum wouldn't let me morph my axie cos she's afraid of a 'lizard' running around the house and I had to correct her, I said "HE'S A SALAMANDER NOT LIZARD!" and she was like "Oh yeah." I wouldn't morph mine anyway plus my little boy's happy with the water he's in.

Vanessa, most axolotls die if you attempt to force them to morph. The genetics to morph have been bred out of them, and any attempts with chemicals or water lowering just kill them.
