Live plants

Should i be using live plants or plastic, and if live what plants should i get? THANKS!
 
Jordan - you can use live plants if you have enough light for them. Remember axolotls don't like light.

Some live plants that do fine in low light are java fern, java moss, anubis nana and some crypts do ok in low light.

Plastic plants are fine for no light tanks. Just select soft ones that have no sharp points on them so they will not damage the axolotl.
 
Canadian Duckweed, (Elodea), grows just about everywhere, in any circumstance. (except around goldfish!!! lols)
 
Not all light heats the water. Fluorescent light gives off very little heat, and is better to use for growing plants than incandescent. Saying "2 lights increase the water temp to 2°c" is misleading. It depends on the type of lights you're using, the distance the light is from the tank, the intensity of the light, ventilation on the tank. There are many variables that you're neglecting to consider.
 
One of our axies has taken a liking to one of our live plants in his tank, and has almost completely stripped it of it's leaves! I dont think it will do him/her (not sure on sex) any harm, but makes a bit of a mess when it passes them. Is this normal or expected? This particular axie is also very aggressive to our other one, and they had to be separated due to him constantly attacking her(him??). I think I got a gangster axie!
 
I don't know what the plant is called, but I have about 4 of these...

in Elsa's tank and they survive on just the small amount of light coming from the window which is across the other side of the room.

thanks and i don't know if you mind but if you don't i would like to use the shell idea in my tank.
 
I think the shells look really nice, Elsa likes to sit on them.

Just make sure any sharp edges are filed or buried in your substrate

My axolotls shred plants too. I suggest getting something that's 'okay' with abuse. My sword's not looking so hot, but elodea and hornwort seem to stand up to abuse pretty well. Hornwort also excretes algae-inhibiting chemicals!

Both Java fern and Anubias are good robust plants and survive well on low light. My Axies have Java fern in their tank.
 
Your axies also chew on java fern. lol. Java moss is good also.
 
If you don't have lighting then Java moss works great. I also disagree that axolotls "don't like light" because through the research I've done light doesn't negatively affect them unless misused. I have used a fluorescent light on my tank for about 7 hours a day and all of my plants have flourished and my axies have been eating well and are healthier than ever. I have had the light on them for about 8 months now. I really prefer live plants fir a couple reasons. First, they help take out extra nutrients out of the water. And, I think they make the tank look better. It's all personal preference though. Good Luck.
 
it just have "oxy weed" in my tank i dont know the real name of the plant but my axie loves it as a hiding place and its really cheap about $2 per bunch.
