Still gulpping air

OK so i've tested the water levels and the tank is doing ok. However Ugly is still swimming to the surface to yup air and the fluffy bits on her gills have started to disappear - there are no other signs of problem, tail curl has gone, she is eating, there is an air block in the tank, no signs of fungus on her or anything so what could have caused the gills to go and her to start gulpping air?
 
its not abnormal for them to gulp air. but when their gills dissapear it means there is not so much oxygen in their tank. its not really a problem but if you want them to get more fluffier put a bubble machine in there....?
 
My axies gills got smaller because there was such an abundance of oxygen in the water so they didn't need their gills to be so large and so they shrank. I switched off the bubbler thing that's built in to my filter and the fluffiness came back.
 
ah yeah i stand corrected, got it the wrong way round...the more gills they have means they need more oxygen.
