is sand substrate safe for axolotls and is it easy to maintain

could anybody show me pictures of their aquariums as im wanting to make the perfect habitat for some axies and would be very greatfull of some ideas thanks

I have sand and like it. Its black moon sand. Or you can get pool filter sand or play sand. Dont go to a park or a beach it might have crud in it you dont want. I use a turkey baster for daily cleaning. You can also use a gravel vacuum once and awhile. Get the smallest one you can find sand is light and will get sucked up easy. A bare floor is really easy to clean . I think sand looks the best . Dont use gravel. I use lots of live plant look better and they help keep the tank clean.

thanks for the info sorry if this is a daft question because im new to axolotls ive heard a few people talk about turkey basters what are they

Spyyk likes her sandy floor.
I gotta say, it's cleaner than gravel, and safer.
I don't have a problem with sucking it up, but I have a big bag of spare just in case I need it.

A turkey baster is a thing you can buy in any good supermarket near the chicken/turkeys etc.
Used for basting them - sucking up the fats that come out in cooking, and coating the poultry to stop it going dry.
In the axie world, it's used to clean up poop - the sucky thing is very useful for that!

And don't forget to cycle your tank!

thanks il do that still collecting info at the moment want to get my tank perfect first time i also want to know how many axies could fit in my tank its 4 foot everything i read seems to give different advise how bad are they for fighting if keeping more than one

I think you could do 3 maybe 4 . Make lots of hiding places for them it will cut down on the fighting.

I have sand . From what I have read both are good. But I think the big rocks would be harder to cleans, food and poo could get caught and hard to find

i prefer large rocks i am not going to put sand in mine, because i have read that it can block them up somehow, so i am sticking with larger rocks i have had no problem with them, whatever you do dont put really small gravel in i thought my gravel was big enough but my axolotl ate some.
good luck!

Sand doesn't block them up, gravel does, sand is small enuf to come out, but gravel even glass pebbles can become lodged and if it doesn't come out (even months later) can cause probably lead to problems like prolapses.

I think the best substrate is none. Their is nothing to get dirty or clog up you axy. If I had to really choose a substrate I'd probably go with sand but all of my tanks are bare bottom with some plastic rocks and caves.

Just a correction here, while sand typically doesn't cause impactions. That doesn't mean it can't.
