Bare tank substrate and live plants???

Is it possible to do a bare tank set up and still have live plants in the tank? or must they have something to take root in?

I've done fish aquariums before, but never used real plants, and I decided I'd like to use live plants with the tank I will be using for my little Axies.

All responses greatly appreciated!

Real plants such as Elodea (anachris), hornwort, java moss, and moss balls don't need substrate. These are just free-floating.

Awesome, I'm glad, I really want live plants for the tank. Thanks for the info!

you can pot the plants that need to be planted. just get some terracotta pots or something, put some slate down on the bottom if its got a hole and fill it up with whatever and plant your plant. keep in mind though they can get 'root bound' or something

mine like the moss ball. they push it around with their noses. they always seem to be looking under it.

floating plants are brilliant as it defuses the tank light and also gives my sal (sally the axie) somewhere to hide if she is feeling crafty and wants to come to the top of the tank
