I live in southwest Montana, and nearby there is a small chain of mountain lakes called Axolotl lakes. I was fishing there last week (for trout) when I saw a bunch of 'fish' rising in a small inlet of one of the lakes. I tried every fly in the box until finally I hooked one. I reeled it in only to discover this strange amphibian with tiny hands on the end of my line. A local told me that this was an axolotl, but after doing a little homework I'm not so sure. Is it possible that there's a feral population of axolotls living in Montana, or are they just tiger salamaders?
