hi again,
yay i have finally registered....
does anyone else not have a filter yet? and if so how often do other people have their oxygen pumps going? One pet shop person said that i should turn it off ( coz i said they keep gulping the air bubbles!) and that they didn't need it. But i thought it helped keep the water clean. any thoughts welcomed!!
 
hi mary,

an air pump wont keep the water clean. if you have an air pump keep it going 24/7. axolotls have rudimentry lungs but there not the main source of oxygen. i highly reccomend you get a filter as you will have a hard time without one.
 
i dont have a filter on my tank, but i do keep very close watch on my axies and do regular water changes (probably advised to have a filter for newbies though). your filter holds alot of good bacteria that keep your tank in check but it does grow on other surfaces. also their food isnt all that messy and any poop gets cleaned up asap.

air pumps just move water around to increase airation, the more water that come into contact with our air the better!!
 
I've had tanks without filters, and don't normally have a problem. Like Sharn said, you've gotta keep on water changes very regularly.

I keep my airpump on low 24/7 in my axolotl tank. I have one of those 'bubble bars', which is just a long air stone. Unless the pump is on full, it doesn't make a curtain of bubbles, just random ones here and there, and a big one once in a while. I think I'm going to get one of the flexible tube ones instead and see if that works better.

Just noticed this morning that juliet was playing the the bubbles coming off the bubble bar.Sitting there trying to grab them as they went up, doing the full "stalking her prey" thing too.

I had one of those long air stones for a while, but found that it was going really full on at one end, and soft at the other. Petstore said I should put gravel over the full end and it would fix it. Won't work with sand tho. Was only about $10 for the bar and it works loads better. Has suction cups too so you can position it on the glass half way up if you need.
 
yes erick they are, its like locking you in a room with all the gaps sealed, the air would be very stale after a while! also nitrates build up, its sort of like 'opening a window' for them
