Is it alright to quarantine an axie in a 28 litre tank. My new axie Beau has been in there thirteen days so far and doesn't seem to worried about the size. He is mature and about 15-21 cm long. I'm not sure on the exact measurement. He eats pellets happily and i just got him eating frozen bloodworm cubes last friday i think. Anyway how long to you think a 15-21cm long axie should be in quarantine in a 28L tank for. It is the only tank available at the moment.

And i thought i should tell everyone Shifter my first axie is great and happy. He started to follow me up and down the tank about 2 weeks ago. Whenever i do into the room he looks at me then comes up to the glass. If you wana see a pic of shifter check my profile :D answers for the question would be most appreciated.

i think so long as the water quality is good it doesn't matter how small. The axolotl colony keeps theirs in a gallon size tubs if i recall correctly. It shoudl be ok, mine is in a contianer the same size just put in quarentine today (havent named her yet) so i'm going through the process with ya! so long as once they are out of quarentine they are in a bigger tank -thats all that counts!

As long as you keep an eye on water quality, regular partial waterchanges every day or few days accordingly.

Thanks

Thanks Teesha and Kapo.

Teesha: Whe'll have to keep each other updated on how our quarantine axies are :D

Do you have to quarantine for 30 days cause it will be 15 days tomorrow and he deosn't seem to have anything wrong with him. I'm a bit impatient. I can keep him in there for 30days though if its necessary.

Yes, always best to stick to the 30 day quarantine especially if you intend introducing it to a tank of axies, some of which may have been sick recently.

How's your doing? I think i'm half way now....not sure but i marked it on my calander. Ive been busy and forgetful which resulted is less water changes. But i added some zeolite to absorb ammonia so it wouldn't be a problem. She has developed a fungus and i've added stuff to her water (just natural hardness)
I'll keep you posted!

We're doing pretty good. I put Beau in Shifter's tank this morning. So far they have been avoiding each other. They have sat near each other a few times. Anyway i hope you do keep me posted cause we're quarantine buddies. lol. I'll keep you posted on how he's going in the new tank with a friend.

she has finished quartentine.should i put her in with trekky now? she still has traces of fungus but im sure it is because of lack of pebbles.
i am going to name her twirl, orby or squish

Put her in and see how she goes. Maybe it would be a good idea to get rid of the fungus first. I found out that beau's a girl. Shifter and her are friends now. Shifter sits on her all the time lol. Beau is so cute, i hope she lays eggs with shifter. Anyway she is doing good. No fights have been started which is good. Shifter bit her once but thats when they first met and it was feeding time.

What are you feeding your guy's, mine get frozen bloodworms and axolotl pellets.

If the animal is showing signs of disease then the quarantine period is not up and you are potentially introducing problems to your acclimated animals. Quarantine is up when you are sure that the animals are not going to pass any diseases onto the established animals not simply because you waited a set period of time.

I agree with Ed. The whole point of quarantine is to be sure the animal doesn't have any diseases. If it DOES, these must be treated before introduction. 30 day quarantine is an absolute minimum. Many people do a 60 day minimum quarantine.

If your axolotl is getting fungus, there's a reason. If you know the reason, you should fix the problem and then treat the animal.

Kia ora Jay do we get to see a photo of the new addition

Good idea Ian. I havn't got any batteries for my digital camera at the moment but i hopefully will soon. I'll get some pics for ya's.

Kia ora Jay

Choice, eagerly waiting.

i have just put her in after 2 months, the fungus wont ehal as she keep moveign the sand out of the way making it worse. I figure it wont catch because trekky doesnt abrase her toes to nothing! Her toes are of resonable condition, they just look a bit deformed but they healed well, one toe still has blood but in her newer better environment im sure she will heal faster. My axies get earth worm, beef heart (i know i hate the stuff but trekky LOVES it and was raised on it) and pellets. Trek bit her once, but it was feeding time and they first met so i think she wasnt sure what she was. (she hasnt seen another axy before.....unless she saw spot...oh yeh, she did! ops! lol, im sure she forgot, she looked pretty clueless! hehe)

The toes were almost fully healed when she was put in. there was no sign of fungus, just what it did to her toes. the quarentine tank was the cause of the fungus, as it was small and she fretted at the corners to get out causing abrasion and fungus, i treated her with aquarium salt and double the dose of hardener and frequent water changes as well as zeolite.

So far they are doing well together.

I would suggest not using the zeolite as this binds up the ammonia and the bacteria have to grow in the zeolite to access it which means that when you change the zeolite, you could be destroying a large portion of your biological filter.

Cool. Shifter bit Beau the first time they met and it was a feeding time as well. The other day Shifter was headbutting Beau's butt lol. They are besties now and never bite each other a tea time even if they're touching face to face. This morning Beau was having a nice swim around and Shifter was watching from a hole but after awhile crawling back in and Beau sat on the air stone lol.
