alright, so i got my new axolotl 4 days ago. he is my first one and already the best pet ive ever had.
my problem is that i live in texas and its summer and pretty warm down here. i cant seem to keep the water temp where i need it and i have no idea what to do. ive tried the water bottle full of ice method but that only last so long!
i would loveto know any advice you can give me!

hi there i belive if you go to you local pet shot you can buy a cooling system you can also get a fan that cools the surface and as your filter pumps the water around the tank it should keep it cool
good luck.

I agree, a fan (preferably with a screen lid, not a hood lid) will help a lot. There are other ideas in the CC cooling article.

ive actually tried the places in my area and they only seem to have heaters for sale.

You don't have to buy your fan from a petstore. The only stores I have seen them in are marine/reef aquarium stores. Just go to your local department store and buy a small fan. I bought two 4.5 inch fans and they work superbly. Just make sure there is no possible way for them to fall in, say by placing them on a screen lid.

Click on the link I gave in my post above. It shows how to use ordinary household fans.

i have a screen lid, it see no direct sunlight, i dont use any type of light, its in the coolest part of the house. im trying the fans right now, we were going to use the pc fan method that would lower it 6-8 degrees but we couldnt find a 12volt transformeranywhere. so now we are using normal fans and it seems to keep it down a little bit but its making the water move too much and i think that may stress out my axolotl. on a lower setting it doesnt seem to be doing a whole lot to the temp.
someone told me that having an axolotl is a lot easier then having any other form of salamander, is this true? ive had all kinds of animals and so far my little Oni seems to be the most difficult. ( not that its not worth it! i love the little guy)

Whether axolotls versus other salamanders are more difficult depends on one's preference for setup. Some people find an aquatic tank more difficult, some people find a terrarium more difficult. An axolotl is about the same amount of hassle as a large fish would be. I can understand that it's an added hassle if you live in a hot climate.

yeah, me and my boyfriend are currently looking for an apartment and i think once we get Oni there it will be a little bit better. both me and him prefer the a/c around 68-70 degrees whereas his mothers place is almost always around 80 which makes it hard to keep the water temp down.
we are currently using 3 fans and ice to keep the water about where it needs to be.
ive had all kinds of animals growing up, tons of turtles, lizards, snakes or whatever, you name it. the only kinda animal that never really appealed to me was a fish. this is basically a new world to me, im sure ill get the hang of it super fast. its just the more i kept reading about the water temp, the more worried i became.
anyway, thanks for the help guys!
