Do axies seem to do better if kept in pairs?

Thanks-

They don't require the company of each other. They do just fine if kept singly. However, if your tank is adequate, they can be kept in pairs or more.

Kia Ora Mike,

As kaysie says axies don't mind solitude. Our adult bears the scars of cohabitation he has a good sized bite out of his tail which happened in a cohabited tank before we got him. So personally I keep our two in seperate tanks at this stage anyway.

However there are some amazing photos on this site of axie living together very happily. The key seems to be size. Tank size must be big enough and the axies need to be similar in size.

Kapo and some of the other very experienced Breeders and Keepers will tell you Quarentine them for 30 days to reduce the risk of introducing disease.

Another idea is to get a seperator in your tank and put one in each half so they can acclimatise and when you are ready remove the divider.

Good luck
Ian

Heya Mike,

I agree with Ian. Axolotls dont bear the affects of what we would call lonely.
They dont mind being in pairs or groups. So you couldnt exactly say weither or not they do better alone or accompanied. But with the right sized tank it can look stunning to see axolotls living in a community. I myself am thinking of the idea of getting a compainion for my axie Banda.

Its hard to tell weither axies beniefit from being alon or in pairs but it really depends on your prefrence. Just be sure to quarintine as Ian said, and also be aware that in case of your axie being stressed or injured, being in groups can make it harder for an axolotl to heal from these, and would need to be put alone to heal.

Happy Axie keeping!
