HI all i have seen on here that you should not house fire belly toad with any newts i have a rough skinned newt and fire belly toad and they share a tank. I have had them for almost 3 months and they seem to be doing fine together. When i first got them and fed them the toad got the newts foot in his mouth and that was scary but since i have feed them carefully and made sure the newt was not near the toads food near feeding time....actually 99% of the time the newt eats underwater so he is out of the way anyway. Other times i see the newt and toad almost ontop of one another but not aggresively just kinda sitting there.....so my question is are these two ok to live together as long as they are not attacking each other ......what are any of the risks with these two together i know they are both toxic but i change half the water at least once a week so i dont think that is too big of a deal...let me know what you think i want nate newt and fat mike to be happy!!!! )

rough skinned newts are really toxic Im surprised the toad didnt die.....

anyways I can tell you what everyone is is gonna say, not a good idea, rough skinned newts need(or prefer?) deeper water then FBT and a bunch of other stuff, it may be going fine for now but things may go wron in the future

Temperature requirements for these two aren't compatible. The toxins they both possess are not compatible. If one decides to bite the other out of aggression, they'll probably die.

No, you cannot keep them together. You're playing with fire.

It depends on your objectives. Clearly, they can survive together, but it's quite possible that keeping them together will shorten the life of one or both of them. How long do you want them to live?

i sawon the species link that rough skinned newts like 60-70 temp in the summer and like 40-50 in the winter????how in the world do you keep their habitat this low when room temp is about 77?

Those temperatures are what they will experience in the wild and therefore if you wish to breed them you would have to provide a cooling period in an outside building or such but you could just keep them at the 60-70 temp range..

Keeping newts cool is a challenge. In winter, I actually move a couple of tanks out to my garage to get them cold enough to breed. It is possible to keep water temp a few degrees cooler than room air. See:
