Hi can anyone give me some advice please. I've just inherited 2 axies from a man who was going to flush them down the toilet because his children had lost interest in them! Can you believe that, but I know nothing about how to keep them.
They are in a tank 12"x 12"square. they have a filter some plastic plants and are on sand with a few largish pebbles in.They are white with pink frilly gills and measure about 20cm long. Not even sure of their sex.

Is this tank big enough for them? What do I feed them(he said they got frozen bloodworm from pet shop for them). Is this okay? What else do I need to do or get for them to live happily.
Not the best way to aquire pets, no research first, but I couldn't see them flushed away could I.
Any help and advice would be gratefully received
Thanks
Tia

How big are they?

People like that should be reported for animal neglect! Just because you lose interest in something alive doesn't mean it deserves to die! There are plenty of people willing to take axolotls, no matter what condition they're in!

As far as keeping it goes, have you checked out www.axolotl.org/ ?

You were really lucky there saving the poor axies:eek: cant believe that he was going to do that, the tank that they are in at the moment is way to small for them you should really get a bigger tank 2 foot long minimum, also try to sex them as you might not have the time to spend on a loads of little axies, the males has a larger cloaca and the female has a smaller one the cloaca it is a bulge behind the back legs. also bloodworm is a fantastic food for axies as they really love them

Congratulations, your axies are fortunate to have found you.

Nominalyy axies like 18" of tank per axie this gives them plenty of space to get away from each other if they want to. In the wild axoloyls are solitary creatures.

Have alook at www.axolotl.org it has heaps of advice on care also have a look at the tanks and setups on this site also more great advice.

Best of luck you have just got two of the coolest pets in the world.

re Help

Thanks very much to all who replied to my plea, it's much appreciated. I've checked the website suggested and found it really useful. The axies I've got are about 20cm long so we've been out today to get them a bigger tank and some prawns as a treat. I think they deserve it after what they've been through. I just hope they thrive and become as healthy and happy as yours all look.
Thanks again
Tia :D
