I've had a taricha granulosa that just seems to be wasting away. He won't eat regularly, and when he does, he doesn't want to eat anything that's actually good for him (no earthworms, usually only goes for waxworms or fish). You can see all of his bones. Recently, he was shedding and it looks like the tip of his tail actually came off. It appears that the bone of the tail is protruding. I don't know what to do for him. None of the local reptile vets have suggestions. I really don't want to put him down.
He's in a 20 gallon tank, partially aquatic, partially terrestrial set up. All water parameters test fine. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

How long have you had the animal, and at what temps do you keep the water? Does this animal have any tank mates?
I have successfully force fed anorexic newts in the past (they were newly imported Pachy's that refused to eat for the first several weeks) but it is not fun, for you or the newt. And I always needed help to do it as well.

I've had him about 5 years now. Temps at 72, 20 gallon long tank. There is one feeder guppy in there that he hasn't devoured.

I have seen newts reach the state you are describing... unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, there isn't much you can do. You could find a vet and get him on antibiotics and force feeding, but it's unlikely to result in a real recovery.

If he's willing to eat waxworms or fish, those aren't such bad foods, I would say give him whatever he will eat. Try to get the tank water cooler if you can. To me it sounds like old age or underlying problems have caught up with him.:(
