Hey y'all. I'm new, as is evident from my post count. I'm trying to get an axolotl, but form what I gather it's nigh impossible to get one here in Canada. So I have a plan. A cunning/stupid plan. I'll be down in Seattle from Christmas this winter, so I though maybe, just maybe, I could buy one there and bring it up to Vancouver. But that left me wondering, how does one cross the border with a salamander? And would one be able to survive the drive from Seattle to Vancouver? Since they get shipped, I'm amusing there's a way...

So yeah, on a scale of 1 to 10, how stupid is my idea? Thanks :)

Axolotls are listed as a CITES II animal. This means they're endangered, and their inter-country transport is restricted. If you get caught trying to do this, you can definitely get in major trouble.

On 1-10, I'd give it a 11.

Okay.... I wasn't going to try to sneak one illegally across the border, I was just wondering if there were ways of getting them across, declaring them as a pet, having documents proving you bought it legally, etc. and if anyone else had done so before. Apparently not.

Well, you could ask your local Fish & Wildlife office (which may be called something different in Canada!) if it's possible. Based on the posts to the ad section, it looks like a lot of Canadians are looking for axolotls. There is one post with some sources given:

I think if you keep hunting, you may eventually find one. They do exist there. Good luck!
