I've had a Cynops Orientalis for about 6 months.
He didn't eat for a long time, but now he's doing great.
He came with another CO but he took a bite out of him (his organs were coming out and he fell into the water when he was still in the terrestrial phase..so we did the plastic bag treatment :[ )..I guess we hadn't offered the right food yet ><
I do feel bad about that.. :[

Anyway, now that I've had experience and mine is perfectly healthy, I'd like to get him a tankmate.

He's in a 10 gallon tank. It's fully aquatic with a small floating land dock.
I had some ghost shrimp in there, but they ended up dying after a few weeks.
So does the one inch of fish per gallon of water rule apply to newts?

I want one more..and he needs to be already adult so that the tank fits and he's not fully terrestrial.

The company I bought them from before lost and delayed the order for over a month so I won't be buying from them again.
I was preferably going to get one from kingsnake so I could adopt one but if there wasn't one on there, what company should I buy from to get a healthy newt?

Also, mine is a male and if I get another male, will they fight?

Thanks so much!

If you want pictures of the newt/tank or anything then I've got them and I'll post them. :]

Most people who buy C.o. get them from local stores. They often are in bad shape, but buying locally at least allows you to look at them carefully and choose a healthy one. When you do get one, be sure to keep it separate from your healthy one, in case it arrives with disease, which is common.

If they are C. orientalis, the males won't fight.

You could also try posting a "wanted" ad on this forum.

There aren't any local stores with CO though.
There were some vaguely labeled 'fire bellied newts' at a local petshop but when I went to buy one they couldn't find any.
They told me they couldn't remember selling all of them so they weren't sure if they were just hiding really well.
I noticed shortly after that they were housed with fire bellied toads..
I think I know what happened to the poor newts... >.<

How long should I keep them separated?
(I'll definitely have him shipped to me, as there's no where local. I'm just not sure if I'm getting one from a personal owner or business)
I don't have another tank, so he'd have to be in some kind of beach bucket or cooking dish, lol!
I've got some pretty big ones though. I'm good at improvising.
(I know the second I buy an 'extra tank', I'll find some new fantastic animal that it houses perfectly.. hence how I got my fire salamander =P..except now I really can't have any more animals)

That's a good idea too. I'm new to this forum, so I'm still getting used to what I can post where etc.
Thanks so much!

Rubbermaid containers with proper ventilation holes drilled (or poked outward) make suitable quarantine enclosures. Just make sure that the lid is tight-fitting and that the newt cannot escape.

you're right!
i hadn't thought of that.

well, when i find out where i'm getting the newt i'll get all the details worked out. i'm just mainly focused on finding a healthy one at the moment. :]

thanks for everyone's help!!
