Hi there I had my axie for about a month now, everything was fine untill 3 days ago, I spotted white fluffy stuff on her gills. I am not sure what it is (bacteria, fungi ?) and her gills are starting to point towards her front. I started a Myxazin treatment and it doesn't seem to be working very good. Any Ideas what it could be? Anybody has pictures of the different diseases and what they look like so I can compare and figure out what my axie has?
So far she is still eating normally. She doesn't move around as much as usual.
Water temp = 20, and for the rest of the water characteristics, I need to go do a test. Sory thats not much information.
I took a pic but its with a mobile (don't have a camera) so its not very good.I tried to attach it just now and it doesn't seem to work
Thanks in advance for anybody's suggestions and help.

Sounds like fungus. Try salt bath treatments 2-3 times per day.

Saltbaths:

Add 2-3 teaspoons of uniodised table salt or aquarium/tonic salt per 1 litre or 2 pints of dechlorinated water (tapwater treated with a water conditioner/water ager to remove chlorine and chloramines)
Remove axolotl from tank, place in the saltbath container.
Place a lid on top (so she doesn't take fright).
Leave her in for 10-15 minutes maximum (no longer)

The tests you need to do are ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. If the ammonia or nitrite levels are above 0, then do daily 20% waterchanges to bring the levels down.

How much dosage of Myxazin did you use? For axolotls/amphibians the treatment should be half dosage.

Does she share a tank with any companions and has the tank temperature been fluctuating (rising above or below 20C constantly) the last few days?

She's alone in the tank and the temperature is constant, I live in England and right now its quite cold so its very easy to keep the temp right. I think she got ill because I didn't have time to do a water change last week (usually I do 2 changes a week and I skiped one.:()
I have used half dosage of myxazin after checking the axolotl website.
Cheers for the tips and the help. I have looked in the forum and it looks like loads of people have had the same problem as me. Sorry you had to write the same advice once more, must be a bit borring.
Thanks again.

A fungus at the gills of Axolotls is not uncommon. There are different reasons why fungus can spread - for instance damage of the gills/skin or (more likely in your case) little bits of food that get caught in the gills where the fungus prospers.

In most cases salt baths (as described by Kapo) are sufficient to get rid of it, additionally you can carefully try to pick the fungus with a tweezer.

Hi Dude,

Without a picture what you have described sounds like fungus as Kapo and Daniel have said. Fungus normally indicates a water quality or temperature issue.

I would as Kapo suggests try salt baths. No disrespect to Daniel but I think Removing fungus with tweezers is something best left to experts. There is a risk of damaging gill filaments that are otherwise ok and I would be scared to try such a drastic remedy. I would stress the CAREFULLY bit.

Good Luck

Hi Dude

No worries! I don't mind giving out advice again if I have to, not all members trawl the threads like I do, so realise they want/need the advice as soon as possible to alleviate any stress (both for the axolotl/s and owner of course :D).

Cheers guys, I haven't tried any twizers technique (thought it would be dodgy) but the myxazin seems to be workin now. The fungi started to disappear but she remains rather innactive.
I checked the water and everything seemed to be fine but I changed 20% just in case. If it doesn't get sorted and I have to do salt baths, is that going to stress her a lot ? and if yes, should I "fridge" her?

As long as you just use the dosage salt required and don't leave her in the saltbaths too long (15minutes maximum). She may or may not appear slightly irritated at first (mine are all used to saltbathing, after initial swim around and I cover the bath (with lid) they settle down.

Hi
I don't have anything really big for giving the bath, is it ok to put her in a 5 liter plastic goldfish bowl?
Another question... Can I do salt baths and keep going with the myxazin or would that be too much?
cheers

Do the saltbaths and leave the myxazin

You can use any container as long as it fits her lengthwise and just fill a litre or two to cover her body. Empty the water out after each use.

got it, she'll be saltbathing tomorow.
Cheers

hows the salt baths going,
remember to keep them up for a while even after fungus has disappeared, this will cut back the chance of re-infection.
