Hi all, I am going to Egypt for a week on Sunday. I have 2 options in regards to my axie - 1) get someone to feed him or 2) don't feed him at all. Both of these options have their pros and cons.

1) Get someone to feed him:

pro - he won't die,

con - he is difficult to feed, I use chopsticks and perseverance. I can imagine someone dropping excess bloodworm pellets in htere, fouling the water and then he migth die.

2) Don't feed him at all

pro - he won't be able to foul the water as quickly

con - he will die.

My question is, will he die? He is juvenile, about 11cm from 'nose' to tail. I am feeding him daily at the moment, 2 days in a row 2 bloodworm pellets, 1 day half a prawn.

Can someone advise what is the best thing to do?

Thanks!

Don't feed him at all.

The only thing is can you get someone to come in and do a waterchange each week and check the temperature while you're away (make sure you stipulate they don't feed him)?

thanks - I'm only away for 7 days, so hopefully if I change the water just prior to leaving I won't need to have it changed mid-week. I don't think temp will be an issue as it's bloomin' freezing here now! the tank temp ranges from between 15 to 18 degrees at the moment.

One thing though - do you think I should 'fatten him up' a bit prior to going away?

Thanks :)

If you're only away 7 days, I obviously didn't read it properly, then he'll be fine. Feed him the day before you leave, but don't overfeed, you don't want regurgitated food in the tank (just a normal feed will be fine).

As for temperature we're meant to be coming into our summer and we're having 15-18 degree days (plenty of sun, no warmth, lots of wind, oh and every second day it rains just to remind us summer is not quite here! :D )

Enjoy your holiday in Egypt!

The only thinkg that I would add is that I would cover curtains and turn heating right down so that your axolotl is cooler. I would also be tempted to try it on some live food..daphnia ( larger) can live in the water. But as super Kapo says..a week will be fine. I've left mine for a week and 1/2 and they looked completely fine on my return!

Thanks guys, that's reassured me now! I'll be back on here after my hols no doubt!

Hi Wreckgar,

Have a good holiday and don't worry even juvenile axies can last with out food for a considerable length of time. If you can cool your tank right down it will also slow the axies metabolism and reduce its need for food.

You must be heading into winter so it may be cold already.

Good Luck
