Hi everyone, its been a while since i was last on but i've got problems with my axie again, she was in the fridge for a while after floating upside down, she got well and i got her tank all nice and sorted for her and shes been in there the last 3 weeks, for the first week she was absolutly fine, stomping around the tank, eating happily and generally looking like her old self, the second week she started floating, but i think this was normal because she went back to normal later in the day, then she started to float lop-sided, then upside down and now has lots of little white dots all over her, she looks all knobbley, like shes been chewed (but there aint anything to chew her) shes not smooth like she should be, the dots are pretty small but cover pretty much her entire body and they stick out :( i've put her back in the fridge but i'm at a loss at what to do next. As for background info, the tank readings were perfect when she went back in, the ammonia level rose a little in the second week so i've been doing extra water changes, the temp is fine and theres no gravel, just a few very large pebbles, oh and shes still eating fine (really well actually, nearly takes my fingers off!). I love her to bits but all these problems are getting me down, i'm in two minds whether to give her up, but i'd have no idea who or where to give her to.

If she's floating again - you'll just have to repeat the treatment that you did before for her, make sure her fridge container water is as low as possible so she doesn't float.

Another thing how old are your testkits and are they the strip kind or the test tube kind. Whichever ones they are get your tankwater retested at the petshop to confirm if it is the same or differs from your readings. Old test kits (a year or so do start to degrade; strip tests can be pretty unreliable).

When you mention pebbles - how many and how large? I remember you had gravel in your tank too - might pay to remove the pebbles completely and just keep your tank floor bare. Axies adjust to bare tank floor. That way you can see how much you feed her, if it does get eaten, it's far easier for feeding especially live food (which won't bury within substrate) and for tank cleaning.

Does she share a tank? How large a waterchange are you doing and how often? Do you use any sprays etc round her tank (just in case something got in her tankwater)?

Do you add anything to the tankwater at all (apart from a water ager)? Also, how often do you feed her per week and how long is she?

The only other thing I can think of apart from keeping her fridged while she's recuperating is to look for a vet that specialises in exotic pets or knows about axolotls.

ok, she seems a bit happier now shes in the fridge, shes the right way up at least!

The test kits are pretty new as i got new ones when i had problems before.

I removed all the gravel and i've only had a few decorative pebbles which are between 5 and 7cm in diameter (absolutly no way she'd be able to eat em!)

Shes on her own in the tank, when i noticed the ammonia rising i was doing a 20-30% water change ever other dayish, i don't really use sprays around her but i did have a scented candle burning at christmas but that was 2m away from the tank.

I don't add anything else to the tank other than water ager, i feed her every 2-3 days (shes not skinny or fat though) She is 12.5cm long.

I think the floating is under control, its the weird little raised spots all over her that are really concerning me. As for vets, i think i'd have to travel halfway across the country to find someone who might have the slighest chance of knowing anything about axolotls, it took me 6 mths to find a pet shop that would stock them and then they ordered them in especially, i don't trust vets anyway, last year one told me my rabbit had a brain tumor and needed a £800 MRI scan, turned out she had an upset stomach from eating carpet!
