After my axolotl had her right forelimb bitten off I left her in the fridge until the stumb looked clean and healed and then returned her to the other tank with the other axolotl. I assumed it was an accident as axoltols will eating anything that dangles infront of them. However, this accident happened again 2 days later.

The flesh has been ripped from the limb but the underlying skeleton is still intact. She is back in the fridge but is there anything else I should do? Should I take her to the vet? I'm a vet student and I'm pretty sure that vets here in the UK wont have any idea what to do.

Any ideas? Will the skeletal limb simply fall off? Should I do anything else?

Richard

P.S. She will not be replaced with the other axolotl now.

hi,
im sorry to hear of your troubles,
in my opinion i would definately try to find a vet.
if you have a zoo near they might be able to point you in the direction of their own vet as they usually deal with reptiles and amphibians

If someone with appropriate surgical experience cuts off the limb neatly at the point the flesh is ripped it will almost certainly regenerate perfectly. I cannot find literature references to how this injury will heal if left. It may also heal well but I don't know. I've seen one of my juveniles heal a shorter bony stump of about half the humerus (The arm bone above the elbow) before regenerating well. The main risk of doing nothing is probably infection. If it heals deformed a vet could amputate to allow a repeat regeneration later.
