my other axies love to swim up n floats at night. n he does that every night at the same spot

Might be trying to do a poo!

I agree with Kapo,

Behaviour like this can often mean that your axie needs a pooh

our new baby has taken a liking to the top of the tank, it just floats there, then goes down.. its not stressing, just hanging so I'm not worried

really??? dont think so... because normally if they wanna poo, there will be a black spot(visible) near the exit

dont know whether u guys understand what i meant

It could be breeding behavior.

It could be breeding behavior.

I agree with Michael here. If it's mature it could be doing a courtship display. I've seen my adult males do something similar from time to time.

Lazylilsnoop - I do know what you mean. And I've seen the occasional raising the tail like yours (also in the dark - but lowered in the light) and or bum floating up when ours have needed a poo (you don't always see the dark spot coming out) and it's taken a few days to happen.

Michael/Jake -I thought it may be a bit too young for breeding - going by the colour of it's belly!

Wait a second! Is that a little tiny axolotl in the background (by the fake hollow log) of the first one, or is that a fish? In any case, what the heck is it doing there?

It's probably a feeder fish ben. Lazililoop uses feederfish (guppies and neon tetra yea?)

Yeah I kind of noticed the tail after posting. In the past I've been cautioned against feeder fish on this forum, yeah their easy to feed, fun to watch, it might be hard to find a reliable source. I just have received two axolotls that were raised on almost pure feeder fish and worms, and it's next to impossible to get them to eat anything that doesn't move (they'll go for sinking pellets, but once they touch the bottom, that's it). It put's me at ease to know that at least they're not trying to mix what appeared to be a very young axolotl in with adults, in an attempt for peaceful coexistence.

so basically raising its tail is normal??

i got another axie... he likes to float at night(cooling) n he doesn't like to stay still wit 4 legs facing down. is either his left 2 legs are down n the other are facing upwards. very weird.
and during the day, he does that under the filter. basically like sticking on the glass

as for that 1st pic. it's a feeder fish i bought it ages ago. even before my neons. all neons are gone, n that feeder is still alive. he just cant get caught

I guess it depends on how young the axolotl really is. I've had 5 month old males begin breeding behavior and even dropping tiny spermatophores and they were only a bit over 5 inches long.

yep my it called riddle has taken to habitating the top of the tank now . When the light goes on it sits on the bottom, and it hasnt done that much this week due to the light not going on with the temp the way it is.. It will still go for a swim but it likes hiding under the floating plants, it just looks like a mini crocodile, gills are perfect params are perfect, we are sitting between 19 and 21 deg in the tank which is perfect for my babies seeings how the room temp is 35 and above.
I thought they danced rather than floated for the courting ritual?

My two white (leuceustics) axolotls both apear to be doing this, both more so during night time , they have black dots on there figure tips witch as what i have read is sexual maturity , at this time both tails are stainding both up high, after a water change the temperature has been drop accidentally by around 4 degrees.
not sure if that helps this matter at all. but i believe its some sort of mating dance

Yes, but you need to quarantine any you buy for 30 days, or breed your own.

so pet shop feeder fish are no good without quarantine? i was thinking about getting some, but will avoid it if it's really a bad idea. i was planning to get the smallest ones i could, so they wouldn't hurt my axy.

They need to be quarantined to be sure they won't pass any parasites or diseases to your axolotl. I'm sure axies love them, though mine has never had any.
