I just checked on my taricha, and she was floating upside down....I immediately took her out of the water and put her in a terrestrial setting....she is fine now, but what caused her to do that?? I have 3 taricha's, and she is more terrestrial than the other 2...my larger male is fine, and the other is a female, and I she was out of the water as well....I am confused because the male is fine and just ate, but the other 2 (females) aren't in the water as much...

Mostly the causes of this are they ate too much, or they swallowed a pebble, well if there are pebbles in your tank.

There are only two reasons that a newt would float upside-down, as far as I've ever experienced. Either the newt is sick (nearly dead) or laying eggs. I can't tell from your post which of these would apply, if either.

Have you done any water tests? How much water do you remove from the tank weekly?

I took her out and put her in a terrestrial environment and is totally fine...she ate a piece of worm yesterday.
My other newts are doing just fine in the water. Eating and playing.
They lay on their backs when they are about to lay eggs?? My female is gravid, and has been out of the water staying away from the male, he is always wanting to amplex her....

They may be upside down while trying to lay eggs..usually they become kind of contortionists when egg laying, acquiring very unusual positions.
As Jen said i can only imagine a newt doing that because of egg laying or serious sickness.

after re-reading my posts and responses, my newt wasn't upside down, she was on her back....floating...not upside down.
