My axolotl, Jane, has started spitting earthworms back out at me!

She hungrily snaps them out of my hand, chomps away and just when I think she has swallowed it -she spits it out. When I reoffer it she goes through the same routine. I did realise that some were a bit big so have started cutting them in half but she has started doing it with smaller ones as well. The worms are purchased from a pet shop and stored in the fridge.

I am trying to build up her weight as she recently went off her food and lost a heap of weight due to having a tummy full of aquarium gravel (which I have now removed).

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jo

Try varieing her diet, blood worm, prawn, or even a bit of beef heart will help her gain some weight.

My axolotl spits out worms if I feed her too much, too often or too large of earthworm. Try cutting them in half and feeding them to her

Yes thank goodness! Thanks for asking.

Over a 2 week period I collected about 40 stones.
I have now replaced with bigger stones so hope that will solve the problem

Thank you all for your advice.

I will continue to cut up the worms and add a few prawns to her diet for variety.
In hindsight I have probably been over feeding her to try and build her back up so I will back off a bit.

She is about 2yrs old, so how often should I be feeding her and how much is adequate?

Twice a week I'd say. I feed my 1 year axie twice a week with cubes of food usually (1cm x 1cm) and I give him one. Occasionally I throw in a few little salmon pellets as well.

I buy my food (including the salmon pellets) from an aquarium, more specifically Subscape Aquarium in Richmond (not sure if you are from Victoria?). But most aquariums should stock them.

For the frozen cubes, I use brine shrimp and blood worms. I tried frozen daphnia briefly but was too messy and they are too small to feed an adult.
