I have a lot of juveniles to rehome that are about 2 inches long. I am wondering what the best way to ship them would be? I read the shipping caudates article and am wondering if the water bottle method would work. Also, would usps be the best choice? I also am in need of knowing the laws pertaining to shipping to other states. I live in michigan. Thanks.

USPS would be best because FedEx and UPS don't accept live animals. There are certain days the post office will accept animals for mailing, and you should always ship at the beginning of the week so that they don't get stuck in a post office over the weekend. I would suggest calling them first and asking.

I have to disagree with you on that one vanillaXtiffy, I've had plenty of animals shipped to me by ups or fedex in boxes clearly marked "Live animals" "Live Tropical Fish" "RUSH! LIVE FROGS" and such with no problems. I've had problems with usps in the past, but that's what insurance is for.

Send them double bagged in fish bags with 1/3 filled with water, the rest with air. Pack them in a styrofoam box with an ice pack and newspaper or packing peanuts to absorb the shock of being handled roughly.

I've always been told they don't accept them. Maybe it's different for birds? Or maybe the people saying this were wrong.

According to their rules, UPS and Fedex do not accept live animals. I have obtained special approval from Fedex to ship live animals, but I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get it. The people who accept and deliver packages probably just don't check, which is why Jake gets away with it.

The important thing with USPS Express Mail is that it is NOT overnight to every zip code. This is the page where you can figure out whether the package will get there next day or not:

For best results with that form, set the date to a future weekday.

Also note that axolotls are illegal or restricted in several states.

Does anyone know which states exactly that axolotls are restricted or illegal in?

Axolotls are illegal in New Jersey and California.

That's interesting. Why? Nearly everything in Australia is illegal, except Australian natives and various exotic aquarium species (the reason we can keep axolotls). My understanding of the US is that you can keep practically everything*, being the libertarian paradise that it is;)

States have the power to regulate which species can be legally kept. It's not a nation-wide thing.
