I hope someone can give me some advice! A couple of months ago my husband got a bunch of "Water Dogs" out of a tank in New Mexico. He put a couple into my tank that I was setting up for an Axie. I decided I liked them and wanted to give them a try. On the Axie site I was told that they are most likely tiger salamanders. Well one of them has morphed into a sally. I don't want him to drown, his gills are just the barest nubs. If I can't figure out something to put into the tank I'm going to have to get rid of him. I can't afford to get his own tank. Problem is I don't know anything about them. When they morph do they prefer to stay out of the water all together? Can I keep him with the other and just lower the level of my water and attach something for him to get out on whenever he wants? Please help!! I would really like to keep him, I've grown very attached! Thanks!

Tiger salamanders need a full land tank after they metamorphose, preferably one with enough substrate for them to burrow in. If they are kept in too much water they can drown, especially around metamorphosis.

Some kind of large plastic container filled with top soil/coco would be a cheap, suitable alternative. You definatley need to give him plenty of land and either burrows or something to burrow in.

If you have a couple of them, they will all morph and become terrestrial. Lasher has given good advice on how to keep it temporarily. Sweater boxes (rubbermaid type) are especially effective, and cheap.
